Each of our endorsing organizations and communities has their own way of explaining our philosophy – we encourage you to browse through them. Our Basic Principles document also summarizes our approach.
The International Federation of Secular Humanistic Judaism was founded in 1986 to connect Secular and Humanistic Jewish national and regional organizations and communities to issue statements on shared positions, hold biennial conferences, and further communication throughout Secular Humanistic Judaism. After a reorganization in 2007 as the International Federation for Secular & Humanistic Judaism, the IFSHJ has reorganized as a network of like-minded national and local organizations who share a commitment to basic principles of Secular and Humanistic Judaism.
The IFSHJ is not an active body that an individual or group joins. We are currently a network of like-minded national and local organizations who share a commitment to basic principles of Secular and Humanistic Judaism. If you are looking for a local group (or interested in helping to start one), please visit our list of endorsing organizations and communities.
The IFSHJ does not have staff, funding, or direct resources beyond what you find on this website and through the websites of our endorsing organizations and communities. For example, the International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism maintains Resources Pages that may be helpful. If you are in an area covered by existing endorsing national organizations, please contact them to find out what assistance they offer to new and emerging local affiliates.
